A Short Story

A boy and his father sat on a low concrete wall that ran the perimeter of a park. Two old men sat across the way, not far enough where their features could not be seen in detail. One wore an elongated mask of a face, dull eyes staring listlessly into nothingness, and mouth drooping ever downwards. The other shone with a glimmer and keenly looked about, sitting erect. The men looked identical, for they were twin brothers, but the young boy noted the difference and asked his father why.

“Boy,” said the father, “Though those two men started life the same, only one has truly lived.”

The boy did not sleep that night, restless in his dreams to live.
