Not quite a blank canvas

15 Sep I just found this amazing newspaper article from 1974 featuring my dad, when he was 24 years old and in the National Guard. The photo above shows him (second from right) and his best friend Steve (far right), whom he has been best friends with for over 55 years, since they were five years old.
My dad is one of the funniest people I know and this article cracked me up because it’s clear that he was always a total jokester, even back when he was my age:

“This is the best camp we’ve ever had,” said Sgt. Mike Galella, of 1 Beverly Place, Norwalk, as he alternately hosed down a gun and several of his fellow campers for the benefit of photographers.
“Next year,” he said jokingly, “I wouldn’t mind going to Hawaii.”
Galella drew number 103 in the draft lottery a few years ago and has one year and seven months to go on his six-year enlistment….
As he was perched on the back of a truck and jokingly asked if what he said was actually going to be printed, [my dad’s best friend Steve] Pignataro said the Army way of life is not for him but “it’s better than going away for two years.”
Galella agreed.
“Sorry?” he asked. “No, I’m not sorry I joined. I wish I was out. But then again, that’s show biz.”
